Part 1: How do you summarize two weeks of a life changing experience? It feels a little strange to be back home after two weeks in Kenya. This was Sharon's first time overseas in a developing country. And while I have lived in and traveled to many countries, there was something unique about this trip, a way of seeing that I was unfamiliar with up until this time. We started our journey May 14, leaving Dulles Airport in Virginia after a two hour delay because of weather. The flight was the first of many overcrowded flights, and it was difficult to sleep. When we arrived in Amsterdam, we met up with another team from Indiana, also following our itinerary and serving at Kima International School of Theology (KIST). Due to our delayed flight, we had minutes to spare to connect with our flight to Nairobi. Another eight hours, and we were in Nairobi. We freshened up and spent the night at the Mennonite Guest House, and awoke to a beautiful Sunday morning with the strains of familiar hymns from a nearby church. Our driver, Charlie, who grew up on William Holden's ranch in Kenya (his father was the foreman and a big game hunter) invited us to attend his church on the outskirts of the city. All the guests were introduced and asked to share. We got to experience for the first time the joyous worship of a Kenyan church. After a rousing sermon, we were invited to partake of a special lunch prepared by the minister's wife (Rose) and friends. The beef stew, mashed potatoes, sauteed cabbage and chapati (flatbread) were delicious. Our hearts and stomachs were full and ready for the next leg of the journey. Next Post

TBC Goes to Kenya in May
Doris and Sharon of The Braeded Chord are on their way to Kenya. Asked to accompany a team from Fairfax Community Church, they will be going to serve at Kima International School of Theology (KIST) located in Kisumu, near Lake Victoria. KIST has students from five African nations. While there, Sharon and Doris will be doing what they love to do-- making music and passing along music skills and training for future church leaders, something they have done at several churches in New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia. They will also be performing at the Bunyore Girls School, located near KIST, and at the Rafiki Children's Center in Kukuyu, near Nairobi.
